Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls Book 1)

Summary:

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without.

Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever. (Summary and book cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

This was a fun book!  I found it a welcome change to the standard werewolf story and it has me intrigued to read the next books in the series.  The imagery was beautiful, but the build up at times was a little slow for me.  It does give the characters a lot more of the foundation, but I still found I struggled.  I'm torn on whether I think that made the relationship more realistic or could have been glossed over.

Grace is a practical and logical heroine and Sam is endearing in his struggle to maintain humanity.  What I liked about this book was that it broke out of the mold to some degree.  Rather than being completely blind/straightforward in their relationship, Sam and Grace DO struggle with trust.  And they are not stunningly happy at all times.  Overall I found it sweet and a fun quick read.
