Twilight (Twilight #1)
Summary:
About three things I was absolutely positive
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him - and I didn't know how dominant that part might be - that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
When Bella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret.
What Bella doesn't realize is the closer she gets to him, the more she is putting herself and those around her at risk. And it might be too late to turn back... (Summary and book cover courtesy of goodreads.com)
Review:
That’s right – I’m going to post an official review. Much like “Fifty Shades of Grey”, I felt like I was missing something from my review site by not having something out there for “Twilight”. A few notes: I’m going to ignore the backlash and hype that was around this and try to remember exactly what I was thinking when I read the book the first time.
As far as I’m concerned Meyer created magic in the first book. Regardless of what many people thing, there IS a reason why “Twilight” became such a phenomena and it was because it mashed up the paranormal with young adult books in a fantastic combination. Ignoring the movies (as they always should be in comparison to books), the story was original and unique when it came out. The characters are intriguing and as a teen when I read this, it was perfect. YES, Bella was a bit of a pushover, but honestly she was relatable: she was clumsy and never felt perfect and she was a sucker for a mystery man with a pretty face. As far as the movie goes I think that Kristen Steward made her seem more insipid than she was in the book feeding the backlash. Do I think this book needs to be a role-model for life? No, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t entertaining.
As a series, I think they went downhill after the first book, but this is a review for “Twlight” and therefore it gets four stars in my book. Indignant responses: begin!
Rating: 4 stars!
Who should read it? Romance and paranormal fans – you just need to know what started the modern obsession.
