I Was Told There’d Be Cake
Summary:
From despoiling an exhibit at the Natural History Museum to provoking the ire of her first boss to siccing the cops on her mysterious neighbor, Crosley can do no right despite the best of intentions -- or perhaps because of them. Together, these essays create a startlingly funny and revealing portrait of a complex and utterly recognizable character who aims for the stars but hits the ceiling, and the inimitable city that has helped shape who she is. “I Was Told There'd Be Cake” introduces a strikingly original voice, chronicling the struggles and unexpected beauty of modern urban life. Review:
I found this book hilarious. I saw there were quite a few terrible reviews, but I completely disagree with them. Humor is often hyperbole so honestly I don’t mind if there are a few exaggerations or if people critique Crosley’s lifestyle…I find her fantastic and I was laughing out loud consistenly.
This was a collection of short stories from Crosley’s life and the various ridiculous events that have happened to her. The story about being asked to be a bridesmaid alone would have made this book worth it to me. Could she have had a more preposterous experience? I also loved her portrayal of summer camp, I can completely relate and envision that experience. I would highly recommend this collection for chicks in their mid-20’s to mid-30’s or young at heart!
