A Family Affair (Truth in Lies #1)

Summary:

When Christine Blacksworth's larger-than-life father is killed on an icy road in Magdalena, New York, a hundred miles from the 'getaway' cabin he visited every month, she discovers a secret that threatens everything she's always held to be true. Her father has another family which includes a mistress and a daughter. Determined to uncover the truth behind her father's secret life, Christine heads to Magdalena, prepared to hate the people who have caused her to question everything she thought she knew about her father. But what she finds is a woman who understands her, a half-sister who cherishes her, and a man who could love her if she'll let him. The longer she's around them, the more she questions which family is the real one... (Summary and book cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

This book is getting five stars because while it’s been many years since I read it, I still remember it vividly and think about it often.  I’m not completely sure why this story among many stuck with me, but I think it’s because it forced me to change my mind completely.

Initially, I was furious with Christine’s father for having a second family and irritated with Christine’s unwavering devotion to him.  Over time, I was convinced otherwise and was surprised by the additional twists one family could have.  I never was able to fully respect Gloria yet still found I enjoyed her dynamic with the kids.  This is a fantastic read that dives into family dynamics, relationship and challenges your definition of right and wrong.  Having just realized there are additional books in the series, I will certainly continue the series.

Rating: 4 stars!

Who should read it? Chick lit fans willing to stretch the definition of family.
