Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret
Summary:
Margaret Simon, almost twelve, has just moved from New York City to the suburbs, and she's anxious to fit in with her new friends. When she's asked to join a secret club she jumps at the chance. But when the girls start talking about boys, bras, and getting their first periods, Margaret starts to wonder if she's normal. There are some things about growing up that are hard for her to talk about, even with her friends. Lucky for Margaret, she's got someone else to confide in... someone who always listens. Review:
This was a very cute book to read as an adult. I definitely remember girls talking about this book growing up, but I had no interest at the time. (I was too much of a tomboy.) That being said, I think this would have been valuable to read at the age as it addresses a lot of the insecurities that come up.
One of the things I didn’t realize as a kid was the religious discussion that is throughout the book. There is no “right” answer, but it did get me thinking a little which is valuable in a kid’s book. I will say though – I’m glad there are more modern options for periods these days than then the ones listed in the book!
Rating: 4 stars!
Who should read it? Girls about twelve or parents of girls that age.
