Review:
This was still a very great sequel, but there were some things that struck me as a little odd. First off, one of the things that makes Pierce’s characters so engaging is that they’re not perfect. In this second book, it doesn’t seem like Aly makes any (significant) mistakes and she has all the skills she needed. She continued to develop as a responsible adult, but less so in her skills as a spymaster. I would have liked to see her challenged a little more rather than things coming easily.
Additionally, I do with that we had learned more about some of the other leaders of the rebellion. The raka had been planning for generations and by only getting Aly’s perspective it comes across as if she’s “saving” them, which stricks me the wrong way. I still think there are fantastic elements and this book is extremely compelling, but just a few things that bothered me.
I love how the Sarai / Dove situation fell out, I think it fit better and there were multiple things I didn’t think were going to work out had they not happened as they did. Loved that twist!
Warning: Repeated violence and sexual content.
Rating: 4 stars!
Who should read it? Folks who have read the first in the series or else it would have been a bit confusing.
