Lirael (Abhorsen #2)

Summary:

Lirael has never felt like a true daughter of the Clayr. Now, two years past the time when she should have received the Sight that is the Clayr's birthright, she feels alone, abandoned, unsure of who she is. Nevertheless, the fate of the Old Kingdom lies in her hands. With only her faithful companion, the Disreputable Dog, Lirael must undertake a desperate mission under the growing shadow of an ancient evil.

In this sequel to “Sabriel”, winner of the Aurealis Award for Excellence in Australian Science Fiction, New York Times best-selling author Garth Nix weaves a spellbinding tale of discovery, destiny, and danger.  (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

This book is so fantastic in my opinion simply because of the adventures in the library with the Disreputable Dog.  That being said, I know that many people will find this book to be more of a bridge book between “Sabriel” and the evens in “Abhorsen”.  The second and third books in the series go as a pair and if you’re going to read them, you should read them as a set.

All Lirael wants is to fit in, but she quickly has to find other approaches to life and taken on the mantle thrust upon her.  I love that the sendings have a sneak beak into things such that they seem to know what’s coming even if not exactly what it looks like.  I’d highly recommend this series, but it may be pretty confusing without first starting with “Sabriel” for context.

Warning: Contains repeated violence.

Rating: 5 stars!

Who should read it? Fans of adventure, coming-of-age with a dark twist to the storyline.
