Smoke & Summons (Numina Trilogy #1)

Summary:

As a human vessel for an ancient spirit, Sandis lives no ordinary life. At the command of her master, she can be transformed against her will into his weapon—a raging monster summoned to do his bidding. Unlike other vessels, Sandis can host extremely powerful spirits, but hosting such creatures can be fatal. To stay alive, she must run. And in a city fueled by smoke and corruption, she finds a surprising ally.

A cunning thief for hire, Rone owns a rare device that grants him immortality for one minute every day—a unique advantage that will come in handy in Sandis’s fight for freedom. But Sandis’s master knows how powerful she is. He’s determined to get her back, and he has the manpower to find her, wherever she runs.

Now, to outwit her pursuers, Sandis must put all her trust in Rone and his immortal device. For her master has summoned more than mere men to hunt her down… (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

This was a book that I gave 3-stars right after reading it, but the storyline quickly faded and I couldn’t remember any distinct aspect of the characters.  It came up in conversation and I struggled to give a proper description of where the book left off before refreshing myself!

The premise of this story is intriguing if a bit dark, and Sandis is a heroine that has the potential to become a hero.  Somehow, however, she falls a little short for me and makes some clearly terrible choices.  Once Sandis and Rone meet up, they seem to spend an inordinate am0unt of the book running away or avoiding getting caught.  Between the running and inner monologues, we don’t get much movement forward in the story or character development.

This won’t be a series I continue with, I’m afraid the trilogy may have been a result of publisher’s recent love for series to sell multiple books rather than a story that made sense to be trilogy in my view.

Warning: Contains violence.

Rating: 2 stars!

Who should read it? Folks who find the premise mesmerizing, but otherwise I would say  it’s ok to miss.
