The Soulkeepers

Summary:

An unlikely hero.  A timeless adventure.  When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother's car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can't find his mother's body. Made a ward of his uncle and thousands of miles from home, a beautiful and mysterious neighbor, Dr. Abigail Silva, offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom. In exchange, she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a gifted warrior charged with protecting human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother's disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions Dr. Silva's motives for helping him. (Summary and book cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

“The Soulkeepers” is an engaging and interesting interpretation souls and the afterlife.  I was immediately sucked into Ching’s world and couldn’t wait to start the next book in the series.  Jacob’s lack of memories keeps you guessing about the circumstances of the crash and if he’ll see his mother again.  Dr. Silva is an allusive and fascinating character, I was never sure if I liked her or not.

This book is certainly written with more of a young adult audience in mind, but I still found it an entertaining read.  I heard complaints about the small-town overall culture, but again I found it appropriate (and redeemed itself) with the target audience in mind.  Overall: unique and new concept.

 Warning: Religious overtones
