Summary:
Mr. Quimby's going to college, Mrs. Quimby's going to work. Now that Ramona is eight, she can go to a new school with a new teacher and ride the bus all by herself. But after school she has to stay with Grandmother Kemp and be nice to that bratty little Willa Jean until Beezus who's tempermental enough to ruin anyone's day comes to take her home. Review:
I clearly remember reading the Ramona books as a kid, but I did not remember them in detail at all. As such, I definitely wanted to give “Ramona Quimby, Age 8” another chance as an adult. And wow, I forgot just how much is packed into these stories! It’s no wonder this book won a Newberry Award. Not only does the story tell how Ramona is negotiating the new environment in the 3rd grade, but she also tells about the many changes happening within the family.
It’s refreshing to read a book that doesn’t have the “perfect” family and is struggling to get along. And it’s certainly more relatable! There are no perfect families out there and this is a great book for young kids to read to help them realize that (if they don’t already). These are certainly books I will give my kids one day; I’m glad I gave it another shot!
