The Tethering (The Tethering #1)

Summary:

All sixteen-year-old Jacob Evans wants is to win the heart of Emilia Gray, but with order in the magical world crumbling, war threatening, and Emilia’s boyfriend living across the hall, he may never have the chance.

Jacob Evans loses everything he has ever known and is tossed into a world of magic. The Dragons, a group of rebel wizards, are threatening to expose the existence of magic to humans. Jacob is determined to find a way to fit into Emilia’s family, but as his powers grow, so does the danger. With the death toll mounting, Jacob is accused of acts of rebel terrorism and must fight to stay in a world he’s only just beginning to discover.

When Emilia’s life is threatened, Jacob must risk everything to save her. Does he have the power to rescue her in time? And what could their survival cost? (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)

Review:

This is a book that definitely sucked me in quickly and was read in only a few sittings.  (It actually reminds me quite a bit of another book I read recently: “Family Secrets”, but with a male lead if you want another good read.)  This first installment is all about coming-of-age.  Jacob is forced to manage his feelings for Emilia, his changing new magical abilities and finally being thrown into the conflict that comes with the magical world.  All in all, this resulted in a fun light read that I would highly recommend when you want some light-hearted adventure.

That being said, the magial world was not clearly defined to me and I still had a lot of questions on how the world operated.  That made me thing the author didn’t know themselves and limited the book to “very good” when I think it could have jumped up to “great”!  Because of that I think the series will only get better as we learn more about the characters and magical world.

Warning: Contains referenced violence (but without too much detail)

Rating: 4 stars!

Who should read it? Fantasy fans looking for something light.
