A Wrinkle in Time (Time Quintet #1)
Summary:
It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.
"Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me be on my way. Speaking of way, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract".
Meg's father had been experimenting with this fifth dimension of time travel when he mysteriously disappeared. Now the time has come for Meg, her friend Calvin, and Charles Wallace to rescue him. But can they outwit the forces of evil they will encounter on their heart-stopping journey through space? (Summary and cover courtesy of goodreads.com)
Review:
This was a book I was convinced I had read when going into my reading challenge, but in re-reading it I did not remember it at all. That being said themes and concepts in the book seemed familiar so perhaps I just do not remember it.
Most of all, I enjoyed that the science wasn’t dumbed down. The explanations make sense and if you were not quite able to follow it, there were characters in the same situation and you could just go with the flow. Meg is a great protagonist, she doubts herself and has her own struggles yet still grows into a stronger character in the end. Most importantly she is self-aware. I believe reading about characters like Meg growing up challenged me to reflect on my own actions and why I did things making me a much better person because of it
I enjoyed this book more than many of the other children’s book I’ve re-read which goes to support the last power of this book. I’d highly recommend it for readers both young and old.
Rating: 4 stars!
Who should read it? Both young and old who have not read it and want to read about a clear good versus evil story (but not dumbed down despite the clarity).
